I was wondering how you guys go about killing/keeping your steelies after you caught them.
I usually C&R, but when I need eggs for spawn sacks I will keep a female (of course, it is ate also).
I heard to bleed them, which I assume is cutting the arch of the gills. But I would rather do this after I killed them due to it taking a long time!
Just wondering what you guys do?
Thanks!

John S., I didn't know about your dark side. I can't imagine anyone wanting to kill a poor fish. After all what did it do to you? It bit on your hook and gave you a thrill with it's runs up and down the river. You pulled it from the river and admired it. It's silvery sides with the pink stripe. How beautiful it looks. And now you want to take the life from this beautiful creacher. Shame on you. Oh that's right, you're going to take the eggs and then eat the fish. Depriving this fish the right to motherhood. A long life. The chance to give another angler the excitement that you had. I'm only fooling. O well, just in one of my moods this morning. Most guys I know just cut the gills and let it bleed out. You could carry a billy and hit it over the head first. Have a Happy New Year. |

| Not sure they would bleed out very well if you cut them after they're dead? From my knowledge, bleeding them isn't meant to kill them as much as a way to help with the flavor. Less blood equals better flavor. You could just throw it on the bank and let it die that way also if you're not concerned with the flavor or if you're going to smoke it. I don't think smoking it will make a big difference if its bled or not. |

Bob, I was just about ready to tell you where you could go !!! Then you changed your tune!!
I noticed that when I am cleaning a steelhead there is a lot of blood that gets all over the table and really makes a mess. Yesterday after I was home I cut their throats and propped them up in the cooler tail first and let the blood run out and this was the ticket. When I fillet them there wasn't any blood mess to deal with. Since I cleaned them in the bathroom in the barn that was a plus not having to deal with the mess, just had to wash out the cooler. I think that I will do them all that way now!!! I also soak them in salt water over night before I freeze them, I do this with all of my fish. |

Bob Y, you make me feel like sticking my head in a hole like an osterage! LOL (At least I'm trying to do it KINDA nice) I hope your a vegan!
I did cut the gills but it doesn't kill them fast. I heard that you could put them in ice water but since they practically live in it I don't know how good that would work. Also, I don't like carrying my ice cube tray with me when it's not snowing. I heard to stick them in the brain, but I guess it's very small. The last and probably best method is knocking them with the billy behind the eyes.
I don't really like leaving them on the shore, I would rather make it quick and semi-painless.
Unfortunatly, I was fishing yesterday and someone said that someone zipped a fish then threw them in the woods! Sorry for sharing the news but I have to vent somewhere. Kinda wish I was there, he wouldn't do that again!
Sorry if I offended anyone by this tread! I am trying to find the most humane way. A fact of life though is we do need to eat and I personally can't last too long on rabbit food . Hopefully, I'm not being too selfish. |

I have a friend (I know that surprises some of you) that takes a ten gallon bucket out on his boat and bleeds all of the walleye he catches. Anyone else do this?? Says they taste alot better bled??
Takes scissors and cuts the artery between the gills and puts them in the bucket of water head first. Says you know they are bled out when the gills turn blue. He claims this is even more important on steelhead cause they have alot more blood.
Again, I don't really know. I don't keep fish, hate filleting them and don't really care for fish that much. I know its brain food (maybe I should eat more). Hell with it, I'm smart enough. I do understand why some of you eat so much of it -- oops did I say that out loud?
Plus, I've always been a big bass and muskie fisherman and have kind of been conditioned to not keep them.
I will keep a female steelhead for the eggs though. Why pay for bait if you don't have to? Plus this is a species that basically eats their own. Isn't that cannabalism ???
John - I wouldn't worry about offending anyone on here, I don't think any of us take ourselves to seriuosly. If we did someone would step up and make sure we got over it. |

| I have bled them and I have soaked them in salt water over night and I do not see one bit of difference other than a mess in my cooler. I will tell you that my wife has started soaking them in milk before she cooks them and there is defiantly a difference. |

| I know bleeding them makes a big difference when you clean them. Don't have near the mess on the cleaning station. I also think that it does improve the flavor a little. After all the blood is the first thing that spoils. Tried the soaking in milk. Didn't see enough difference in the taste to make it worth the work. |

| I think the only time that soaking filets in milk makes any difference is when you use Crosseyes' recipe and that is breading the filets with Captain Crunch cereal. LMAO! |

I don't know personally, but I was told that bleeding the fish keeps it fresher longer. In addition, I guess it supposly makes the eggs last longer.
I know when my parents eat the fish they squeeze/pour lemon juice on it to remove some of the fishy taste.
Seapro, so you meen you guys aren't PMing eachother "Ways to humanely kill John S"?? That's good to know, at least I'll sleep good tonight! |

| The milk deal was for eyes and perch. I don't know anything that will help a steelhead other than my smoker and then I can make it taste like honey glazed ham as per Mr. Betz. Bob I think she soaks it for a good 8hrs. |

| DE, Viper told me about the milk but I think he said his wife only soaks it for about an hour. Anyway I've tried it anywhere from an hour to all night and still don't see a great difference. And I was also talking about the eyes and perch. I give my steelies to my son that has an oriental wife and a restaurant. They give them to the cook and he cuts the fins off, guts them and throws them in the deep fryer. I haven't tried them. |

Anything is good deep fried, walleye, perch, shrimp, pickles, twinkies, oreos, there was a cat on FoodNetwork that deep fried an entire hamburger- bun and all.....said it was the best he ever had.
Now, if someone can tell me how to not get that stinkin' fryer smell throughout the whole house let me know, I only do mine outdoors.
Ahh, I can feel my arteries clogging now..... |
