Went out with Crosseyes today for Perch. Went straight out of Lorain to around the 31 line. Was a little on the slow side with on and off bites. My cousin Bill had a 14.5" jumbo. Things kind of went dead for us so we moved east to around the 8 line. We started hitting them right away and was for sure the best bite of the day. My friend John was new to Erie perch, he was using a single hook set up. I noticed he was a little slow getting them so I set him up with a spreader. I never saw a guy catch so my doubles. I bet he had close to eight in a row and fifteen for the day,he was a happy camper and hooked on perch fishing now. I was using two of Ole Pete's jigging spoons at the end of a crappie rig with good results.

| You are right my friend 14.5" and 2.12# in 1984. I wasn't the one that measured it and I'm sure it wasn't 2.12#. A carpenter read the tape so I hope he knows the big and the little marks. Anyway it was a big ass perch and I would take thirty of them any day !!!! Thanks for pointing that record out, I thought that the record would be bigger than that. |

I also went out on Saturday. I went with my wife, my father and my daughter. We went out of hotwaters. Got a late start and got out around noon.
People coming in said they limited right off the break wall so there was a small pack there. We tried there for 1/2 an hour with no bites. So we went in some where another small pack was and they where not catching anything either. So we headed straight out from the lighthouse to a small pack of boats about 2 miles out. Got one jumbo perch and that's all in about 1/2 an hour there. So an hour in we only had one perch. We seen a bigger pack west some and out another mile or so. Ran over to that pack and stayed east of the pack. Guys next to us was slamming them. We was catching a few here and there but wondered what was going on as they was only a few hundred feet away.
They limited out and left. As soon as they pulled up we slammed them non stop! We ended up with out limit of 120. Also caught 10 huge white bass. We caught them while coming up with a perch on the line. They would hit about 1/2 of the way up while you was coming up fast. Kept them and cooked them up the same day. They seem good as long as they are not frozen.
Might be my last time out as my motor isn't running. Had to come all the way in on the 7.5 hp kicker. It would start run for a minute or so and then go real slow until it stopped and gas would come out of the front of the carb. If I cut gas off to the motor it would rev up real good right before it ran out of gas. Not sure if I should fix it this year or wait until spring. I planned to fish until ice over but not sure.
Looks like the perch are really going to start to heat up soon now too. Some of the perch had eggs starting. |

| Well, get ready for some nice weather, I'm doing my part. I put the boat away for the year Sunday. That's usually followed by at least 2 more nice weekends! That's OK with me, this was an excellent year. I've run out of room in the freezers, I still have to turn the garden over, and the honey-do list isn't getting any shorter. Good luck to all you die-hards on the lake! |
