Guys I need some info on how to get this to work. In order to keep the RPM's up to keep the boat from stalling all we have been trying to use a dirft sock off the back of the boat. Well as far as slowing us down goes it works. We can keep it from stalling and run from 1.5 all the way to 2.5 or higher. However the problems comes in the steering. We tie the sock to a rope that is attached to the tie down rings on the transom. And we can not keep the sock from swing left or right. Any Ideas on how to keep the boat straight?
I have always run mine on the side of the boat. I let it come almost to the back with in about may be four feet. I don't think you want to run it out the back, you will have problems getting fish hung up in them. Try them on the side ,I think you will like it there. Good luck and let us know how it worked for you.
I usually run my bags of the sides of the boat also. Tie the front of the sock to the side of the boat and the other to the back cleat. I know on other peoples boats we have run them off the sides as well and have no problems. No matter what you are still gonna have to steer the boat for proper boat control but its not that difficult to do. Another trick is bumping the throttle in and out of gear. Might help ya, but some guys don't like to do it cause its hard on the motor. Hope this helps.
Not sure what type of boat you have but running any bag off the stern negates the rudder effect of any motor/prop and impacts steering. Running one on each side works for most boats and has little impact on sterring. If you attach a dump line to the rear of the bag it makes it easy to retrieve. On some boats it is possible to run one bag off the bow. Just make sue your lead line is not too long and well attached to hull. Again you need a dump line to retrieve. Good luck.
