I have an i/o powered by a 1972 302 ford engine, it cruises along just fine, but if i open it up it shuts down like it is out of gas, i cleaned out gas tanks, new fuel line, new fuel filter. if i let it set a while it starts right up again. any ideas?

do you think it would be better to replace the mechanical fuel pump with an electric one?

I'm not a motor guy at all but it has to be in the fuel pump-carb floats or coil I would think. It might be sucking to much or starving for gas or air.Seeing it is a 302 go to a local shop and talk with them,I'm sure they can point you in the right dirrection.

Sounds like a fuel pump issue to me.You might want to check the carb also. Is it a 2-barrel or 4-barrel. The jets could be clogged up and there is a screen were your fuel line comes into your carb.If it is a 4-barrel your secondaries may not be opening. Start the boat and let it idle. Take the flame arrestor off the top of the carb. With a flashlight check to see if the is any gas dripping down from the squirters. It won'tbe a steady flow but a drip every once in a while. If that happens you need to replac the jets that makes the motor run rich.

took the bowl off the carb and it was a MESS inside, when i cleaned out the tanks i didn't check the carb. have it in being rebuilt. that should do it. the only thing left is the fuel pump, but it seems to be pumping ok. so i will see what happens.

it has a filter between the tanks and motor, but when i put carb back on i'm going to put a new one with the water separator on it. the boat has 2 tanks,a valve to switch tanks, and the filter between the valve and motor, thinking about putting a filter on each tank before the switchover valve. never owned an i/o before and just learning all about how they work the hard way.

I would just put 1 good one in with a spin on filter!!! 2 of them are not needed at all!!! Learning the hard way tends to sink in a little deeper!!

got the carburetor back from being rebuilt, put it on and the engine runs great at the dock, still have a problem with the elec choke, if i can find a cable long enough,i'm going to put a manual choke on it. checked the wire going to elec choke and have juice comming to it, but it just doesn't want to open at the right time. revved the engine and worked choke by hand and it run great. hopefully before too long i can actually take it out on the lake and also get back without a tow.
