We caught some a couple weeks ago in about 45fow a little east of due N out of Lorain.
No telling where they are after the wind we had for a few days.

I suppose you read nice perch caught 6.5 miles out.
We caught some nice ones today in 42fow NE of Lorain harbor. Several over 10".
Also caught the "Trash Slam".....sheepshead, catfish, white perch and white bass.
I really don't mind catching fish other than yellow perch. Even a 20" sheepshead gives a whale of a fight and keep it interesting.

Well, this may not be the best way, but here's how I do it:
Spreaders, 1 oz or better weight (keeps the line straighter down and gets you down faster).
EMERALD SHINERS......you can catch them on golden shiners or chubs (fat-bellies) but Emerald shiners are the best.
Monofilament line. I have used no-stretch and I just don't hook up as much. I can feel the bites better, but catch more with mono. I've done side-by-side tests a few times.
Stay on/near the bottom. Sometimes you can let the whole rig sit on the bottom for a couple minutes, then raise it up slowly. WATCH THE ROD TIP! You should use at MOST a medium power rod with a fast action (light tip so you can see the bite). I let the sinker sit 6-10" off bottom. Sometimes you get better results setting the rod down and just watching it. The motion of the boat will trigger the strike.
But if you're not on the fish.....you won't catch any! Start by looking for a pack, then motor SLOWLY thru them to see if anyone is catching. Perch fishing is much more social than walleye fishing (although the guys on this site are the BEST!) & will often give you a thumbs up if things are going well. I've found that marks right on the bottom are actively feeding fish. Marks up 2-4' indicate fish are around, but try to anchor right on top of marks ON the bottom.
My favorite spot is 3miles due N of the Lorain light. It's about 50' deep and bit further than most folks go, but it's my starting spot almost every time.
It's an acquired skill. Detecting the bite is not as easy as it may seem. That just means you get to practice lots!!!!

I haven't had a chance to get out more than 45 minutes in past 5 weeks or so. Trim/Tilt motor failed, steering started acting up and I couldn't get the boat over 10 mph (3k rpm) to save my butt. Thanks to the guys at Copper Kettle the trim motor and steering are fixed and working fine, but South Beaver really messed me up with the rpm thing. Said it was fixed and charged me a bundle of $ and still only went to 3k rpm Saturday. Took the afternoon off from work Tuesday and went to see the boys at Beaver. The service manager guaranteed to have it working fine for me this weekend...we'll see.

Catfish...The info that ErieBoy gave you is spot on as far as Lake Erie perching goes. You will get better minnows, Emeralds, at Hot Waters, but they do a serious count of every minnow, so know how many dozen you want when you go in to buy them. Georges sells by the "dip" so there are a lot of minnows in his dozen, but they are a mixed breed type of bait and a lot of times they won't produce as well if the Perch are the least bit picky. A friend of mine went out Sunday past and had to go out North of Beaver to about 48 fow to find the Perch and then only caught 23 between his passenger and himself.

A decent Perch bite should start up again shortly and start to slowly move in towards shore, within the next couple weeks. Following the coming of the cooler weather next week, and depending on the inland effect of the hurricane(s) blowing along the East Coast for the next month.

i went out of beaver yesterday. guy at the bait store said they were taking walleye 30-35/20-22. went out there, didn't get any. saw a small pack perch fishing in that area. stopped got two decent perch and more small white perch than i could count. went to 37/16 where i limited on jombo's in 45 minutes last week. got there around 3 or so limited in 1 1/2 hours. huge perch. only one throw back, 3 sheephead and a catfish. it 12.69 miles out of beaver, but worth the ride, if you don't want to mess around with dinks and junk. trolled the 16 line in, no takers on walleye, just some worm stealers.

I couldn't find minnows so I used some I salted and froze last fall. They worked pretty darn good!
I fished in 39fow just off St Anthony's Sat afternoon. I kept 18....6 over 10" and 2 of those over 11". I probably caught 30 - 34 total. It was streaky, but when they were "on" I was quite busy. I must say, I was surprised at the action on frozen bait.
