Any body use a solar powered trolling motor charger? With gas prices going up more and more I was thinking of this kind of charger for the trolling batteries, while your using them it would be charging them for you.I use a 24 volt system and don't know any thing about them so I thought you guys might have some thoughts on how you keep your trolling batteries charged so you can use them all day long.My old boat only had one 12 volt battery on it and it was only good for about 1.5-3 hours may be the 2 battery 24 volt system will hold charge for most of the day-How long guys if you have the 24 system?

I just read something about the solar chargers, because I was considering them. I wish I remember where it was but it was on more than one forum. Both places said to save your money and just charge it with a either a on-board charger, or charge with the new microprocessor chargers. The cost of the solar chargers are pretty expensive and like anything else where the technology is new, your going to pay alot and usually it takes a while for the R&D to catch up to make it worth buying

Mark, They make on-board DC Alternator chargers that hook up to your outboard charging system that will also charge your trolling motor batteries. Examples are the Minnkota MK1DC, MK2DC and MK3DC chargers.

I have 4 batteries on my boat, for 36v, 24v, and 12v, and i use Dual Pro 4bank charger, i "heard" that they have a better product than Minn kota's chargers, here's the link to the manufacturer site, and i believe Cabelas sells them too.

http://www.dualpro.com/

and the Dual Pro SE on cabelas is here: http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/product/standard-item.jsp?id=0013381014928a&navCount=7&podId=0013381014928&parentId=cat600056&masterpathid=&navAction=jump&cmCat=MainCatcat21276-cat600056&catalogCode=IJ&rid=&parentType=index&indexId=cat600056&hasJS=true

and the rest of them, all of them on cabelas...here: http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/index/index-display.jsp?id=cat600056

That 24 volt system will troll all day at about 50% speed. Solar chargers work to charge batteries but at only about 2 amps, so you would not keep up with demand.
I have Optima batteries on my bass boat and they will troll all day! They are expensive but work well!!
As someone else suggested, you can charge your batteries from your main engine also. My Baha boat allows me to do that via a switch that charges one or both. On a 24 volt system though, it would need to be wired correctly.

Will fish for food !!
