Getting ready to set the boat on the trailer,finally.It is a Continental that had 5 seasons on it and all I think it did was to and from the marina once a season but had dry rotted tires,oxidized wheels and frame.So I rough sanded,conversion coated and primed the bares with a self etching zinc chromate but allowed it to sit.So I sanded the whole train wreck again to get to this level.


Then shot it with zinc where bare.

Sanded again and shot with two coats of a sandable primer.

corners and joints were cleaned to this level.

Converging lines are always fun to do!!!lol...

Sanded again 320 by hand followed up with a scotchbrite purple and spotted any thin areas or blow through,resamded,tack clothed,final washed and shot with a two part polyurethane from Martin Senior.

This is all out of the gun,dried but not worked.

Get to sand some more,gotta love it!!!Lots of corners.

For the dirt we worked in the finish looks pretty good with limited attention thank God.

Check out the shoplights in this fender,my shooter has an eye but pulled an Evil Kneivel and told me that is the last trailer you will ever see him do...LOL...too many corners to create turbulence and awkward angles like the underside.

All in all it took 150 80 grit da discs,100 in 180,50 in 320,8 tack cloths,1/2 gallon acetone to wash,qt. conversion coating,gallon self etching primer,gallon sandable primer,1.75 gallon paint including reducer and hardener and another healthy load of elbow!!!

Very nice Craig. Good to see things coming along so nicely. Hopefully you will be able to put that trailer to use this season. LOL. Take it easy bud and keep the pics coming on the whole project!

| OK, so the trailer is almost done. What about the boat? Another 2 years and you'll have to redo the trailer. lol. Great job Craig. Wish I could do something like that. I have enough trouble slapping a coat of paint over the dirt and rust. |

Craig, You need to get ahold of me, I sell all the stuff you are using. I'm a premier 3M distributor and have over 190,000 items in my catalog (basically same as a Grainger or McMaster but far better pricing). I also have a skid of dead inventory with various items, sandpaper, tyvek suits, gloves ect.., that I would like to get rid of. Yours, if you are willing to pick up. Moving along quite well this week.Bunks were the first thing to be addressed.I have used a commercial carpet witk the trade name of Medford.It has no foam on the backing as I think it would tear when used for bunks.Contact adhesive rolled on is the best IMO.Accidentally purchased GEL formula,as it looks almost identical in packaging but found it to be easier to use.

All lumber coated as well as carpet.

Start by centering face and continue by working edge on one side.

Then attach other side,stapling each followed by cutting lengthwise on bottom center and stapling across seam.An electric stapler and plenty of stainless staples as well as many razor blades.

Cut corner to allow miter finish on end.

Fold and cut to match first cut.

Then cut from corners and follow first cut again.

Then attach the last section and cut to blend in.

Only three cuts to be ready to go.

A hammer will sink all high staples.

The sides should get stapled on the miter.

A block of wood was used to lay out carpet.

Doubled up 1/2 inch ULX screwed and bonded with contact adhesive.which after mock built,fit and modified will be painted with 2000e moisture barrier before the carpet and trim are final applied.

Carpet and edge trim cut and fit.

Starting to look like something.

All lighting finished all Grote manufacture,all led.They are super bright and were not all too bad in price,$120.00 for 57 led tails,6 Micro Nova markers and an over 80 bar.All ends are crimp and seal with mastic and will be sealed with a dielectric compound.

Check out this rig job,the first time I saw it it had to grow on me as the kiss concept came apparent.We are going to use a wire tie and a hole in a bracket to retain the brake lines to the axle.
Welded brackets to axles drilled at .250 and took corners off.

Then you feed a wire tie through the hole.

Loop it back through and feed into lock.

Cinch best with a tie tool and cut.

Speaking of brakes,we converted to free backing surge and added a second braking axle to bring the braking capacity up to 7000lbs.The bare bones vessel went 4400 minus fluids so I figure around 6000-6400 wet and loaded.Hopefully this saves the truck's life...lol...

All new polymer coated lines and Brass fittings.


A fresh 66 coupler and hoses will round things out.

Thought I'd share this technique of bearing pack.Started with all new cones and races and seals.
Start by building a bead about the size of the cone on the inboard race,here CRC Stalube marine grease is used.

Then the race is packed with a needle as I don't keep another $50.00 packer just for the boat grease.

Just enough to fill the cage.

Then insert the cone and repeat the bead concept until flush with hub.

Make sure you get good quality double lipped seals and install being sure to pack the v of the lips with grease.

Repeat the process on the outer,bead...
 Drop cone in and fill to level of washer,set washer against cone and install assembly.All I can say about nearing preload it's an acquired feel and if you dont do slot of wrenching it's better to go by book spec and torque wrench.

Then a "bearing buddy",which for us the choice is the polycarbonate Wesbar.They allow you to see the spring and plunger as well as the color of the lubricant.

Converted all the shackle bolts to lubricating style with zerk.

In the middle of this the samples of welting for the upholstery came so I got to do a little refresher with the sewing machine.This will be the mix,buckskin and garnet and it matches the topping almost dead on.Just practice.

Time to put this junk pile together.Yard arms are the easy way of lifting.

Inch at a time,lockable safety catches.

Bottle jack and a block under the keel does the trick.

Getting close,one and a half years off the trailer.




A little setting and resetting.


Match is good without weight.

Rebuilt and refinished winch and added poly bell roller.

Finally,a result other than prep work!!!
