My oldest daughter (8 yrs old) has expressed a interest in the planets & stars. This has also spiked an interest with my wife. Living out in the country, we have beautiful views of the night sky. We were discussing the possibility of purchasing a telescope for Christmas. Can anyone give us any pointers? We do not want to buy something cheap that might break, or gives terrible views, but do not want something that's going to break the bank...any suggestions on a descent starter set-up?
Do they make a Kielbasa colored Reef Runner??? Husky Jerk????

Meade makes great quality scopes that should suit your needs.

For approx $300.00 you could have a really good scope that the whole family could enjoy. Quality optics and very rugged case, this model also includes the autostar option where you tell it what you want to see and it will point right to it.

There are other models available depending on what you want to spend, so take a look on the meade site for other scopes. There are tons of places on the net to shop for the lowest price once you have decided on the model.
