I was out the last 4 days with fly rod in hand hitting the river hard when i can ..and had a great time it has been double digits days and saw some kings rolling at the rock .. rocky was on fire for the most part .... fish all over the place had no problem with them taking the flies mysis shrimp and clousers was the best producer . for me .. now the rivers are low and clear and the offerings have to be down sized they are in hiding mode but you can still get um ,,look for wooded (dams) areas and fast moving white water will defintely increase your chances .. good luck !!! Wake, Sure wish the fish were in the V like they are the Rock. There are fish in the pools of the V in the lower sections but not much up river. Hopefully with this cooler weather that will change. Wish I lived closer to the Rock. Take care man.

| Kev, It's worth the trip when you can go during the week when there aren't so many people. I was happy just having one on and breaking my line. Next time I will try some new spots and may be Wake will guide me a little better or I will just wait in the car untill he gets there this time. |

| hey wake i was wondering if you could help me out i wanted to know how to retrieve certain flys whether i should be stripping it or huggin the bottom or paraschute cast or what. and also how the heck to know what flys to use in certain situations. like i know to use larger flys when the rivers up and stained water and smaller flys when the waters low and clear. is it just an experience thing to look at the river and know what to use?? |

| hey chef,, its mostly consist of right angle fishing they hit the flies because they can see it and is all about the see target strike target ... so when they water is moving on the higher ,muddy side then the bigger the flie it will usually make some sorta of disturbance in the water that they can feel and hone in on and attack it thats why bait usually is better in those condition because they smell better than they can see ... when it the rivers are at there prime its anys bodys game..also is depending on what time of the season your fishing early = high water temps fish tend to be more aggressive strikers . when this happens you can drift a clouser (or wooly buggers) along the bottom or bottom bounce it off the bottom .. or you can strip um hard in and around structures ,then when its starts to get a little colder then they tend to stay in the slower water ( and tail outs ) and they will not usually travel more than a couple of inches to get a offering so i tend to go with more nymph patterns , single egg patterns , and more ... i will normally caring say three different sizes of pheasant tail / stone flies .. sometimes i will even throw in clear water very sparsely tied minnow patterns will work well.. i have big eggs and small single eggs in all different color combo ... lol chef you still up .. it really all depends on the conditions and you will get a certain sense if you will .. know what you like to fish with and what works for you .. just stay with it and do it as often as possible and all comes together .. remember to keep an open to try something new ,,, its hard to say what will work and what shouldnt be is working.. lol... next time the rivers are up give me a shout i will try to hook with ya show some pointers if i can .. good luck Wake |

| I know you were talking to chef, but thanks for the info. I've been trying to get just a hit on the fly rod. The last couple of times I went out this week I used a woolybugger with a pheasant tail, about 6-9 " underneath it. If I may ask you wake does this sound like a good combo, to try??? Thanks again for the information. |

hey steelmen .. i hope it helps,, and as far your set up you can run that ..and try some different combos such as double eggs patterns ,or my favorite steelie set up is egg pattern first and following usaully a minnow pattern .. then if thats not producing i change color on the egg pattern but staying with there main diet source hence the minnow pattern .. emerald imtation is the ticket for me .. but i will tie a nymph on too after the egg pattern ... woolys i fish by them selves just my prefernce but they look more like minnow patterns lol... see the pattern here :)
as far as the space between the 2 flies for me depends on the conditions if i,m fishing clear low water that space may only be 10- 16 inches and in more stain water its apprx . 16 - 24 inches because usually comes along with higher levels and stronger currents i feel it adds alittle more time for them to see or feel the presntations ... | right on i appreciate the help. now when u are running an indicator fly are u keeping your split shots above the first fly or in between them or whats the word on that. and what knot do u use thats worthy to attach the second fly to that hook. and i also heard not sure if its true with steelies but i heard that when salmon come in the rivers to spawn they dont feed so u have to basically piss them off with a certain color to make them bite is it true with steelies. ya that would be great to get out. i actually have this coming monday and tuesday off... how convinient. if u would like to hit the rock let me know not sure if you have my number yet but u can get it from my ol man. im still workin on that casting. |

when you are running weight with the flies .. i like the weight above the first flie and usually i put on the leader .. this way they do not slip down and i like to believe it allows some natural movement to your presentation .. there are some new weights that come with its own little nippers to cinch them to the line .. but i have not been impressed with there holding capability IMHO ... i like the improved cinch knot at the bend of the first flie
as far how they bite .. if i fish um at all during the spawn its for drop backs or freshy coming in .. i think we shouldnt fish um at all on there beds ( albeit tempting as all get out :) ) ...but that a personal choice .. there a little group called B--S master who make alot dreams happen on spawning fish so ...
but they will feed just not on there beds/ redds nor will i get into some tactics over the web on how to,s on such targeting techniques .. sorry bro its a respect to the fishery kinda thing only .. nothing personal Wake |
