Well I couldn't take it anymore, I had to go and try for a steelie. I went to a small popular stream on the west side. I got a late start at about 9:30 this morning. When I got there I was suprised to only see one other guy fishing and he was getting ready to leave.
I was floating flies with my spinning rod and didn't have any hits, so I started throwing spinners. Again nothing. Then I switched to spoons and caught my first steelie of the season after about ten minutes. After that I didn't have anymore hits, had a few follows, but no more hits. I called it quits about 2:00 and headed home.
Not a great day, but at least I didn't get skunked.
Dave, I really like that rod and reel combo I got from you. It works great.

bigmtman;
I hope it will improve following the next real rainfall we get, need to get the scent of the river out into the lake a couple miles to call them rascals in.... Maybe sometime this week if the fronts keep coming through.
We went to the Vermillion, Beaver and Hot Waters Sunday and no one was doing anything there either. We played with spoons, maggots and mini-marshmallows with my wife taking a 4" chub on the maggots... At least it was a beautiful day to mess around fishing from shore for a couple hours.

Thanks spinningwheel and Bigmtman. Yeh those silver bullets are alot fun! I sure hope we get some of that rain they're calling for this week, we sure could use it! If I can get another pass from the wife, I might have to hit it again this week-end and bring the fly rod along. Now you're talking fun, with a fly rod!
Where abouts is the boat ramp from Daves shop? I want to take my dad steelhead fishing one of these days, but I need a fairly level area where I can put a chair down and not to much of a walk either. My dad is 81 yrs old and can't walk over rough ground to far. Any help would be great. Thanks Lynn

Right across the street at the boat ramp. As you are driving down the drive there is an area that you can park on the right at the bottom of the hill right next to the river. There is also a nice spot where there is a little drain pipe with water running out of it, that would be a good place to set and fish. Come on rain !!!! My son and I had our first experience with fly rods in the spring and had a blast, can't wait to get started again. Come on rain!!!! Never thought that I would be wishing for rain.

The great part about it all is that you get to enjoy the fall weather - without the early snow - and simply sit and watch your bobber, as bigmtman wrote, until it disappears or starts to run up river, then the real fun begins.
I have to work 1/2 day Friday and full day Saturday, both O. T. days, so my steelie plans are kaput until next week Fri/Sat days off. Let me know how you all did!

Ok DE, you've got me all geeked up to try this, and appears you got your wish, so is this enough rain to get them moving do you think? What weight rods were you and your son using? I have a 5 weight Orvis, but I'm thinking that may not be enough?

We used a 8 wt. Rain Rain , I want to see the river rise a little so the fish can swim up stream. I would like to see a few inches. Come on Wake you can chime in on this.

You taught me every thing that I know in five minutes.

THEN YOU SENT ME TO THE CAR FOR NOT PAYING ATTENTION.

Thanks DE. I'll have to check it out. I'm with everyone else on this, we need RAIN!
TommyLund I don't think a 5wt. will cut the mustard. I use an 8wt. but you could probably get by with a 7wt. Once you hook into one of these babies you'll know what we're talking about! FUN! FUN! and more FUN!
Where's Dave at? Is he asleep or what?

I do a fish dance (and TommyLund can attest to this) that always seems to work. I'm sure with some slight changes, it could become a rain dance. I'm not thrilled about the outfit required but thats another story.............

Will NOT fish for food !!

Hey Everyone,

Mike and I went to the Grand River, Short Wall, Monday morning.
I nailed five steelhead from 07:30 to 11:00 on 1/4 silver cleo
spoons. I had a total of eight hook up's and brought five of
them in. Two ten pound males & three 6 pound females. On two
of the hook up's my line broke because the steelhead were running
into the cement wall and cut the line. I could of have caught more
but the steelhead were pulling drag on everyone so you had to reel
in and wait unitl people could get them tired out and bring them
in.

There were about fifty people there fishing and everyone was
catching the steel head. The guys who weren't were taking the
extra steelhead being caught by Everyone else.

What a great time. Mike was nice enough to show me a bunch of
different area's to fish. I liked the look of the Grand River
too. We were pretty much fishing inside the breakwall. The
Steelhead come into a big area to gorge and then head up the
river. One of local's was nice enough to share some tactics
and information with me also. They were using 1/2 ounce Cleo's
and he was wondering what I was using. I was changing tape color's throughout the morning, because the fish were hitting different
color's all of the time. I guess they fish the short pier until the
end of October. Early morning or late in the day is the best time
to fish there.

I can't wait to get Vincent there this Sunday.

Later

Hey Tommy,

The Grand river exit is #535 off route# 2. Way East of
Cleveland. The next exit past Route#44. When you get off
the exit stay to the left and do not make the turn to the
right.

It was my first time there since I was a kid. I know where
to go from memory but it's difficult to explain. It's not
hard to find and there are several Bait shops that will point
you in the right direction if you get turned around.

Thanks

Thanks much! Seems like that might be quite a haul from here. Hopefully this rain will turn them on in the Vermillion.
