I fished with a friend earlier this summer that had changed all his trebles to single hook configuration. It was so much easier to remove the fish and not get tangled in the net, didn't lose any off of them either. Has anyone else tried this?

Tommy-Lund;

That's an old bass fishing technique. We used to do it with rapalas and raps and such and I can't say I really noticed a difference in the amount or quality of hook-ups. Maybe others here will have a different view, but I don't think it's worth the effort to make the change.

Tommy-Lund,
We used to change all our spoons to single hooks when targeting steelhead on Lake Michigan. We got a much better catch ratio than treble hooks. Don't have much experience on using them for walleyes.

I know a lot of guys that change to single hooks. I haven't seen a justifyable meaning to. I don't loose that many fish on the trebles.
I have a few spoons with single hooks. But haven't notices a difference other than in the net. But I fish with a lot of cranks with 2 or 3 trebles and fight them in the net. A single treble on a spoon doesn't bother me.

I had the problem with the hooks getting tangled up in the net also. I bought a rubber net thinking it would be easier....what a mistake! Those rubber nets have alot more resistance in the water thus making it harder to net the fish. I went back to my old reliable net and just put up with the tangles. As far as the hooks....three is better than one.

why would you want to give up three hooks for one? and as far as the hook getting caught in the net just have another one. i have a net on each side of the boat. didn't use to until one day one went over board and i had no net. will never leave the dock without two nets again.

All of the hooks on my spoons have been switched over to single hooks. I use Gamakatsu Siwash hooks. Size 1/0 for Stinger sized spoons, and 2/0 for medium sized spoons.

I can honestly say that a lot more fish make it into the net (less fish lost during the fight).
It's also a lot easier to remove a single hook from a white bass's or sheephead's mouth than a treble hook.
There are also no tangles in the net.

Thanks, I'm going to switch about half and see what happens, very good point on the last post, I can't stand trying to get a treble out of a sheep's mouth especially when they suck all three in.

I find that the treble hooks on certain spoons are to dull and bulky to begin with I was loosing fish like crazy on them. So i got the idea to switch to a thinner wire trebble hook and the loosing fish problem solved. Yeah right then there was the pull backs when they were short hitting or on for a short time and come off so I swithched to red trebbles problem solved. Not even close. So i have come to the conclusion you either get a good hook up or you dont I cant seem to find a rhyme or reason or a better way to keep them on other than sharp sharp hooks. But you can bet I will be trying this idea cause If it can increase fish getting to the boat and eliminate some of the net hassle i got check it out . Thanks for the tip Guys !!

Tangled nets and a hook in the thumb prompted me to go barbless. Last fall I took a needle nose plier and pinched the barbs on the front hooks of all cranks. This spring I did the same to ALL hooks. I haven't noticed any additional loss of fish by going barbless.

Thanks GR, I may give going barbless a try on a few of my RR, when I trout fish near Mohican, they require you to be barbless, I'm all for it if there is no loss of fish.
