went out yesterday for perch and walleye. got my 30 perch in just under 2 hours in 31' of water straight off the ver. breakwall. was about 1/4 mile south of the main pack. i had read about one of you guys using old pete's jigging spoons. picked up a couple while i was getting minnows at dave's. seemed like the larger perch liked that presentation. also used a 3 hook crappie rig. funny, the top and bottom hook took fish, the middle one only a couple. i like the set up. the bottom hook goes below the weight and rests on the bottom. somewhere i had read about if you hook a perch, just let it stay down there and often another perch will come along so as not to get left out. it actually works. the biggest perch of the day were 4 double headers in the 12-13" range. then went out towards the west side of the sandbar. marked almost nothing, but practiced trolling. after dark, on the way in i stopped to try drifting and casting as it was starting to blow pretty good. in 39-42' straight off the breakwall the walleye were stacked on top of each other. all between 8-14' down. there were so many bait fish the screen was almost black and the walleye were right in the middle on them. i tried rr, hjs, harnesses, minnows, you name it. could not buy a bite. maybe someone else can unlock the secret. also tred closer in in 20' but marked nothing. still, a nice day to be out. one more thing. i went out on monday for about an hour before getting chased off by the lightning. i put my leftover minnows in salt and put them in the fridge. it kind of formed a brine solution. the perch really liked those. they didn't look dried out like the frozen ones. might try that again if i know i'm going to be going out 2 days in a row. i still have 2 weeks vacation so i hope to have some nice weather before it's time to pull the boat.

| I have marked what seems to be alot of fish and very large ones also, just out from the breakwall. Have a new Lowrance LCX-104, very accurate unit, but have not caught anything there? I finally just figured it was debris in the water? Glad you brought this up cause it has confused me also. I always use the arches vs. the fish symbols but because I was marking so many and not catching any, I switched it over to fish symbols to see if there was a difference and then stopped marking. At least as fish symbols. |

| I don't use the fish symbols was just checking my reading. My questions was what is with that area. I catch alot of fish in other locations and don't mark near as many fish. That area, I mark tons of stuff (fish?) but can't catch any. Just wondering if anyone else experiences this or if it is debris. Thanks |

Was reading your post, about three mounts ago i started using my fish symbole and alarm only on the bigger fish I have a Garman GPS/Sonar i have been able to find feeding fish. I use my bottom lock split screan so i can scan the bottom ten feet. It does take time to learn but can be usefull when looking for school of perch. and walleye feeding. After i have found the feeding perch i try different settings to see does one work better than the other... Good luck practicing Conan |

I have a theory.....they aren't walleye.....they are steelhead staging and hard to catch after dark(not that u can't catch em after dark). Try fast spoons during the day and fast cranks as well. Deep husky jerks in pink clown did well last year. Just a thought I don't know this to be true for sure but would make sense for the time of year.

| When you say fast spoons - how fast? 3 mph? |

| Hey guys i was talking to a Michigan charter captain and he was wondering if anyone targets the steelies as they stage close to the river this time of year?? In Michigan they target them trolling just outside of the river mouths as they start to make their runs up the river. They use more salmon tactics than walleye presentations such as large glow spoons and streamer flies behind flashers. If i make it up sunday i might try this. Was wondering if anyone has targeted them in erie like this as they do in Michigan??? |

| Try a small rapala about five feet down using your downriggers with short leads behind the ball ( 3-6feet). Last couple of years at the end of Oct. just off the break wall I did well. Bob |

About this time last year I talked a friend into drifting in front of the breakwall while I cast a swedish pimple and ripped it thru the water. Yep, the steelies hit it hard. Great time with a spinning rod |

| Little Cleos also work well and any other kind of casting spoon. Steelhead will stay in those baitfish and feed and feed and feed. They have a long journey ahead of them in the river. When I say fast yes upwards of 3mph will work but play with it. They will hit stuff faster than 3 mph as well. Deep husky jerk #12's worked well for us last year the couple of times we tried trolling the breakwall area. |

| I've heard but certainly don't know, that night fishing for steelhead works extremely well, trolling fluorescent spoons. Said they rise in the water column at night to feed. Anyone have experience with this? |

| I've never had the pleasure of fishin' for Steelies..... so would the comparison between walleye and steelies be like comparing a corvette to a chevette? |

I've caught them noodling in the river and your comparision would be very accurate. Caught one trolling this year (small for a steelie 6-7 lbs) was surprised that he really didn't fight that much. I've heard of other guys having them jump their bow and stripping line like crazy. I am looking forward to some of that action. (Notice the positive thinking !!) :-)
Also, if anyone wants to teach me fly fishing this year in exchange for cold beverages or tools or small lake trips in the Manfield area??? I do pretty good on bass, musky, wipers. |

| I accidently caught a small steelhead (5 lbs) and I swear I have never seen a fish run like that one did! What a fight! He jumped and pulled the Dipsy out of the water. Not that big, compared to some other posts, but what a fish. I would love to catch more. |

Toolman, I can teach you fly fishing, but it's kinda of a "Zen" thing, and bud you're a little high strung but at least I won't have far to go for the cold beverages of which you speak. I keep hearing of your fishing prowess, but aint seen it yet! Only on the big lake, and I think I'm the lucky charm there. ten o'clock two o'clock ten o'clock two o'clock (casting a fly) Grab your wallet and we can head to the Fin this weekend sometime.
