There's a good thread about this on OGF. I used the slipsinker/single hook set-up for my wife today and she was able to feel the bite ALOT better. She still lost a lot of minnows, but at least it wasn't a surprise. And she DID catch enough for her own meal for a change.

DE, I used to tie the top hook onto the mono line and then put the bottom one on the snap with the sinker. The only trouble with that is when I would then change to casting and have to cut everything off and retie the snap swivel on. So I got lazy and started with the crappie rigs and haven't looked back. Just my thought, but the rig covers about the first three feet or so of the bottom water column whereas the spreader hangs both baits at aproximately the same place.
I've been toying with the idea of getting one of those underwater cameras and looking to see exactly what the Perch school looks like when it's moving around, but I was recently told that they don't work in the lake because of the turbidity of the water. Anyone else have/hear of any experience with them?

mark, I'm a big fan of the braided. there is no stretch and every little bump you will feel. i agree with de. use your old line from the walleye season. I did use 2 rods, one with a spreader and another with old peat's perch jig. and the jig out fished the spreader 3 to one.

Good post Spinningwheel!!! When it is real slow I will use two rods but as the action picks up back to just one!! Too hard keeping bait on one when it's hot!!! Sometimes I will also use a crappie rig! I love perch fishing, just hate it when it's slow and you are hearing others getting them on the radio!!

Mark;
I use mono, as a matter of fact 12 pound Berkley to be exact. Instead of the Perch spreader I prefer to use a crappie rig with the bottom hook adjusted so it's holding the minnow even with the sinker. I use a medium wt. 6 1/2 composite rod with a 3/4 ounce sinker and, on a good Perchin day may miss 3-4% of the hits. My family all use light or ultra light rods, same Berkley mono in 6-8 pound and same crappie rig setup with 3/4 or 1/2 oz sinkers. I believe in Eagle Claw long shank #6 hooks,(In the mouth, out the gill and then into the back of the minnow) have tried with the #4 hooks, but went back to the way my father taught me and passed the same things on to my family. With the light weight sinkers on I let it fall to the bottom and let the natural movement of the boat lift and drop the sinker on and off of the bottom. I don't fish 2 rods and try to always hold the rod, too many times I've put it down or in a holder and the Perch seem to sense it and will strip you bare hooked in no time. (But the same goes for when you are lighting a cigarette, opening a soft drink or biting into a snack...the little beggars just seem to know when you're not paying attention...lmao.)

Mark, I also like a lot of weight. I want to see that tip bobbin up and down. I like to use Old Pete's weights on my spreader also!! That way when it hits the bottom and I crank it up there is no question where your bait is, the tip bends.

Fair enough.It just seems I have the hardest time felling those little suckers.My 12 year old boy pulls in 2-6 perch and it seems I only feed them,oh well at least I'm fatting them up for him LOL.

I've fished them side-by-side and for me, the 10# mono works better. I lost lots of fish on the braided line.....but that's me. I say rig up 2 rods and fish them side-by-side and see which works better for you. Some days one might be better, but for me, it's mono.
And I don't always feel the bite. Sometimes it's just a slight change in action at the rod tip.

Thanks,I have the darnest time felling those perch hits.Olepetes lures has helped and I'll put some braid on some poles before the weekend.Thanks again.

Wouldn't use any thing else!!! I have used it for the last six plus years. I think you can feel them even just touch the bait at times. Save the old braid that you used on your trolling reels it works real well!!
