if the perch are hitting i always used the scraps from the cleaning of my last outing. Just a little strip were i cut the bone out of the middle of the filet, freeze it till i can use them. If your coming down lake ave. In avon by millers ramp there is, i think, johns bait just to the east of millers ramp. They seem to always have the shiners.

Does anyone have any information on the perch fishing around the islands?

I learned this one from a guy at Eastlake Power, he used to run the concession stand there a couple years ago and was always running out of minnows, but mostly had these available...they work just as well as live.
Take the extra's home and lay them out in the sun, on newspaper, single layer and cover them well with Kosher or sea salt, not iodized table salt as Iodine leaves a distinctive 'taste' that the fish can pick up on; pure salt taste resembles a blood taste apparently. Let them dry out while the newspaper draws out their excess moisture due to the salting process. When they are dry to the touch, put them in storage baggies, pour in a tablespoon or so more of salt, toss them around gently in the new salt and then freeze them. I still have some left from last year that I want to try to use as soon as work/weather/North Beaver and the heavens all line up right for an outing.

Fishingfantom, shoot man all the extra minnows I come home with I don't do any thing to them except vacuum pack them and they work great a few months down the road and when the perch are bitting real good even a peace of the scales work good.

You can catch your own in the vermilion river rite now. They are all over the place. We caught our own on sunday and had plenty to spare. Three scoops with the saine net and we had a bucket full.

Thanks Fellas

Has anyone tried preserving minnows for days when shops are short on supply. I've read many threads about either using Kosher Salt, Oatmeal, Fermaldahyde, and various other methods. Any Thoughts????? What is your method????? How are the results????

going out of Lorain I would say either George's on 6 or Lakeside bait on Colorado ave. I don't count on the bait shop at hotwaters being open. Been stift to many times. But don't forget George is closed on mondays. Vermilion I would say Rich's right up from the docks with the lighthouse in his yard.
