Hi,
I currently have my planer boards mounted on a mast at the front of my boat. I am adding a hard top this year and want to know from anyone that has tried it if mounting them on each side of the hard top is better? I think it would be easier to use them on the hard top but I'm not sure if it's worth the switch over. Thanks
Mark

How about the BIG Jon planer reels? Th mount to your rails on the side of the boat. If you need Jon's phone # on a good solution, please ley me know. Thank you-Dvae

I think it just depends if you can get up front with your new top and operate the reels. If it presents a problem I would consider just mounting the reels at the hard top where you can operate them easer and still run the line through the mast. If this is also out of the question then I would mount the reels at the hard top and forget the mast up front and run the lines off of the hard top. Just remember to keep the lines as high as you can. Hope this helps and gives you some ideas. I myself are going to try some in line boards this year, probably two per side and two dipseys per side also.

Well right now the mast up front works okay. My only problem is that sometimes when it's windy or when I turn the planer board line ends up hitting my outside dipsy rods. It's not bad but it is a pain in the butt. I was hoping that if I mounted them to the hard top the lines would be over the fishing poles instead of sometimes hitting them. With the new top getting up front isn't a problem. I was just asking if anyone has both run them from the hard top and from the mast if they prefered a certain way or not. Right now I have the Big Jon planer mast and reels. Thanks for the advice.

I also have Big Jon,and I know what you are talking about when you turn. That is something you really have to watch or you may be missing a rod or two when the planner board line catches them. Just my guess but I don't think it will matter where you have them you are still going to have that problem unless you are a lot higher. My hit every time I turn too sharp, We usually grab the line and hold it down also a pain.

Thanks Double Eagle and Bait Dave for the advice. I thought it wouldn't matter either way. I guess it's something I'll have to live with. Haven't lost a rod yet because of it but have been close. Anyway I'm really looking forward to some nice weather and getting back out there.

Make sure your rods are in the holders so that the line glides over the back of the rod not the eyes. Still have to keep an eye on them, but it does make it a little easier.

Mark This post may be a little late and may not get seen but I just found this forum. Sure will be nice to have a place to get reports and chat with folks that fish the same waters.
I think the issue of your board lines catching on your rods is a matter of how aggressive your boards are.
I have the same problem. I have the reels mounted at the back corners of my top and the line pulleys mounted at the front. This makes a convenient setup for launch and recovering the boards, the line is easy to grab with a short bungee and it gives a good angle for the releases to slide down. But the lines do get into the rods in turns. I may be mistaken but when I laid out the angles - moving the pulleys forward would only change where the lines hit, not keep them from hitting. I concluded I need more aggressive boards.
Just a thought. What do you think?

Terry,
Sounds like your right about that pulling. I used to have boards that were heavy and pulled really hard but I can't remember if they were out farther, I think they were. I'll have to look into that but I only have a 20 foot boat so having the collapsable boards is the best for me. Thanks
