The forum is blessed with a few new college graduates. Walleye and Steelhead college that is. I don't know about Rod and Craig, but I learned a tremendous amount of info yesterday especially on trolling and making the best use of your electronics.
We did find out the Rod (Double Eagle) will not make it as an Olympic Ice Skater. Rod, I hope your not too sore today. Hopefully the vicodin did there job.
Here are some of my notes from the seminar.
Travis Hartman, ODNR biologist, the highlight of the seminar, offered a lot of useful information on the spawning, aging, migration and the overall health of the walleye population on Lake Erie. -A hard winter and wet April make for a good spawn. -75% of the spawn happens in the lake. The other 25% is in the rivers. -The average Lake Erie walleye catch is .2 fish per angling hour (3 guys, 5 hours = 15 angling hours). -2006 levels were at .7 fish for amatuers and 1.7 fish for charters. -The average age of a 26" male walleye is 16.3 years. -The average age of a 26" female is 10.4 years old. -A 31" female is over 19 years old.
Trolling with In-Line Planer Boards -Offshore boards are the best -The closest board is your deepest lure -Reel in fish from opposite back corner to allow fish to get away from other boards. -In Spring, target top 10 feet of water -Use OR-18 snapper release with super lines or wrap the line around the other releases. -Tuning cranks cannot be over emphasized -Use C62 springs on Tattle Kits in rougher water. -Can use #0 Dipseys Trolling with Dipseys -Use super braids when trolling dipseys. -Always use snubbers with dipseys, you'll lose less fish. -Glue the rings on your dispseys using Shoe-Goo -Do not use shiney metallic dipseys - too much flash -Releases should be set around 4.5# of pull -Do not use deep divers behind dipseys -ripstcks and HJ are OK on a 1 or 2 setting -Use light drag setting -Paint them with a flat paint- green for one side and black for the other
Reading Color Electronics -Never use the liitle Fishy symbol, view raw data -Most active (feeding) fish are higher in the water column -Adjust sensitivity and color to enhance hooks -Turn surface clarity to low or off -Turn signal processing to low or off -Red/Yellow returns = walleye -Blue returns = sheephead -Orange/Yellow = Hard bottom -Blue = Soft bottom -Fish the bottom transition areas -Fast moving fish will mark as a slash or partial hook -Smelt show up as a large hay stack off of the bottom. Steelhead are close by. -Buy the best electronics you can afford. (See Dave for a good deal)
It was well worth the $100. Especially when you win one of the door prizes.

Very good grasshopper !!!!!!!! I had a great time with Mark and Craig at the school, at the boat show and having pizza on the way home. It's nice to gain two good friends from an old fish-en web sight!!! Thanks Mark and Craig !!
You must have been sleeping for the Steel head bit or are we keeping that a secrete.
STEELHEAD - Run down riggers - Use snubbers to help take the shock of the hit - Use sliders or fixed sliders on your riggers to maximize your lines in the water - Flashers, try a small orange flasher for a attractant off your down rigger ball or with a short lead and a spoon - Sent, never hurts, try a trout paste - Down rigger leads, run set backs 8', 15' or a max of 25'. Noise, rigger balls or cable noise don't seem to bother them. For walleyes run a set back of 75'. - Baits, banana styles, small cranks, mid size spoons - Colors, Orange, did I say Orange, anything with a lot of orange, chrome blue, chrome chartreuse, bright colors and glow colors. - Fish finder, Look for bait pods and fish the tops, also look for thermoclines. - When you do catch one turn the boat around and go back over the same spot for more fish usually. - 65' of water seems to be the magic number, look at the east side of bar around the 41 line and go east. around June
OK Kev here is your $100.00 lesson !!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL dude !! |

| Had a great time again this year,Dana,Fishing Fantom, was present as well and I got to hang with him a little as well. This is the third time I have seen this presentation and each time has had something to offer. The food this year went up a notch from sandwiches and salads at lunch to hot food but in comparison to the past the giveaway bag got leaner each year.Ole Pete's jumped on the bandwagon of sponsors this year and was more than generous in the normal Don Petersen way.btw they were impressed with what you gave and it did not go unmentioned.Rod do you really want to go on that learning charter with Rich in the next two weeks as you indicated???Hope ya did not bust your butt too bad,it was rather graceful... |

Well....I thought we were going to keep the Steelhead secrets to ourselves or at least away from Kev but I guess that Rod already spoiled that. LOL
Mark Butler, as far as your comments "hope you fell ok Rod." Craig and I gave him a 7 on his fall. He was lacking style points.
I'll also have to agree with Craig on the take-home gift bag. It was a far cry from the advertised $80 value. I do not see any value in a $150 off a $700 instructional charter trip. |

Hey guys, Thanks for the info but I'm a river steelie man. Not really all that interested in catching em out in the lake cause of the gas bill it takes to get to them. I learned something from you guys today though. Both of you should be happy to know that I was able to get some great info out of your hundred dollars. You wanna know what I learned. LOL Be careful walking across ice. LOL Thanks for the info guys.
Rod, You think you can beat out that Michelle Kwan girl for the world championships this year. LOL. Hope to see ya soon. Later bud. |

| Well Kev, It isn't true that you have to spend a lot of money for gas. There are many time in the fall and in the spring that they are coming out or going into the rivers and that is a very go time to target them. they even talked about trolling in the rivers for some very good action. I think they are there but we just don't give it a try. If I had a smaller fishing boat say like Marks I would be trolling the river and the mouths for sure. I did hear this last fall when we were doing the eyes that there were people getting steelies at the mouth of the Vermilion. |

| Oh yea we popped a few after dark even. My buddy trolls for em in the river and is successful. I just love to walk the river and get em while wading. I've always done well on cranks in the spring and fall around the mouth as well. Husky Jerks and Little Rippers. |

| OK guys, I was lucky , I don't have any aches or pains today. I was probably very lucky at my age. You were both very right on the hand outs, what a joke. They should of lowered the price if they were not going to hand out anything of value. I have a nice shirt that I will be able to wax my car with, a crank bait I will never use and if it wasn't for Don (Ole Pete) donating tackle I wouldn't of had the best prize of all a crawler harness. I learned a lot of good things but I would have to think real hard about going again for the value. Unless I go for my Bachelors Degree!!!! |

Travis has some other interesting comments on the lake.
-The dead zone always has and probably always will be there,it just changes size and shape based on the variables that control it. -Slow news days and the like cause it to come to surface as an issue. -VHS that we experienced last season can flare up from mild winters so we might have more. -A younger female in the population has more value than the big female you release to save the lake,as it will spawn out more times in the balance of it's life. -The radio telemetry program is only looking at them at three places,Sandusky Bay,the Portage and Muamee rivers if I remember correctly once in the lake proper they are out of range. -Some fish will have the old jaw tag as well as a pit implant. If you are unfamiliar with pit it is basically a microchip implanted ahead of the gillplate that can be scanned for creel study. -even with the Canadian commercial pressure the lake is in great shape population wise as far as they are concearned. -He is in agreement with us that a properly cleaned large fish is not distasteful, just more work and waste at the tailend. -If you catch and release a tagged fish record the number to send it to them to add to the data base and I'm sure size measurements would help the cause. -As mentioned earlier our fish per angling hours ratio is elevated from those 03's by about three fold.
Looks like Yale material to me.

Hey Fellas
It was great being at the College and meeting up with you Craig. It was very informative and the summary above handles most of the high points. I'm sorry I missed the fall, but you guys never leave out the details, that's why I love this site. Craig, do you think Don would be willing to put together another one of those boxes like the one that got raffled off at the College? I would really be intrested, just let me know the price. I'm also thinking about geting a new GPS/Sonar combo unit. What is the preference choice, Lowrance, Humminbird, or Garmin (I'm leaning toward Garmin) but I want to get some input.

Dana, Sorry we all couldn't have got together at the seminar.
I've been trying to decide on some new electronics for months. I still haven't settled on one yet. We can resurect my original post on the same subject. http://baitdave.forumco.com/topic~TOPIC_ID~761.asp
My original thought was a Garmin GPSMAP 535s that's supposed to debut in March.
The Internet has muddied my thoughts and now I don't know what I want. I can say it will probably be either a Lowrance, Humminbird, or Garmin.
The new Garmin and the new Humminbird 900 series utilize hi-res cartography. Lowrance units do not offer the hi-res imaging yet.

Craig, Priceless photo. And I would never take his vicodin. I don't take anything but advil and that is very few and far between. DE, Glad to hear you're ok. That way you can get those steelies into that smoker quicker. LOL. |

| Hey guys why the snubbers?I mean some people I see use them but most of the time when I see people trolling and reeling in fish I never see the snubbers hooked up.Do they help that much or what? |

Mark the snubbers serve a couple of purposes. -Absorb shock from a solid fish or steelie. -You know how the dipsy can flip and twist the leader around the release? It acts as a tail to keep the dipsy true in track. -A comment was made about light hitting fish and the use of braid that you may drop fish when they are mouthing it like they can.I think it can help here too. |

Ok Craig I understand the purpose of the snubbers so how do you rig them up. Put them on after the dipsy-then the leader and then the lure? |

Mark
The snubber go before the dipsey. I have to be honest, I've been using heavy monofilament from the Rod to the dipsey, and the dipsey to the lure is 12lbs vanish, but I'm going to switch out and use super braid, so a snubber will definately have to be used. If you are using mono, you don't have to worry about the snubber. Mono has the abililty to stretch up to 30%. I know one thing for sure I didn't like fireline at all and won't go back.
