Do you guys wear your waders from home to the river? Or do you put them on when you get there? I have the Neoprene and they are pretty tight. I was thinking of putting them on at home over a pair of Long Johns and wearing them while driving. Thought it might save time when I get to the river. I haven't waded for years. When I did I had hip boots or the rubber chest waders. Easy to put on at the water. For you guys that use spinning outfits, do you use the weighted floats? If so, do you paint the bottoms black?

I know what you mean Bob, somehow mine seem to have shrunk over the years, along with my other clothes, darndest thing. One tip I can give you, to help you put on the boots, slide a Kroger plastic shopping bag over your foot, helps get in and out much easier. I'll wear my thermals with a pair of shorts on so I don't look completely dorky should I need to get out of the vehicle. No comments needed SeaPro. |

I don't put mine on until I get there. The best thing I did for my second pair of waders was to buy the bare foot style and the breathable waders. With the separate boots with felt soles and studs are a lot easier to walk and drive in. Both came from Cabale's.

LMAO!!!! TL .. if you have a chance to leave from home then absloutly get suited before you get there .. you never know how many guys are going to be in your secret spot when you arrive : )
also you may want to invest in a pair of breathables chest or hips . you can not believe how much more ground you can cover without being swamp nutted by time you get there in those neos :) much more comfortable IMHO ..
much more important here is whatever you decide to go with is to make sure that you have enough room to accom: all your winter foot wear / wool socks,, etc. .. rule of thumb is if you can not wiggle your toes then your shoes are too small .. you restrict the blood flow making your feet more colder and uncomfortable alot faster .. also shortening your time on the water .. you use the breathables when it's this cold? I've got a pair just never thought they would be useful in this weather. As far as cold feet, I use a pair of foot warmers, they are similar to the hand warmers (silica), but a little smaller and have adhesive to stick to your socks, I use them skiing, tried in my waders and they worked great, toasty.

My next pair will be the breathable ones. I sold them when I worked at Dick's and a couple of my customers told me they were really warm in the cold water. I've got the stocking foot neoprenes. I probably should have gone to a size 12 shoe. I wear a 10 and bought 11s. These waders and shoes are brand new. I bought them probably 5 or 6 years ago. The first time they were out of the box was yesterday so that I could try them on. I also buy the toe warmers and hand warmers. Should have had the hand warmers with me on Tuesday. My finger tips about froze.

I use river floats - very small and thin. Not sure what you are trying to get at as far as painting them black, I don't see a need to do that. Most of the time the bait is being offered well below or behind the float, so visual shouldn't be a problem. I try to have my spawn sacs bouncing off the bottom slightly. Not enough to get hung up or impede the drift of the current. I want my float to move at the same pace as the current and I always keep my rod held up high to keep the line off the water so that when I set the hook, I'm not just pulling a mile of line before I get to hook set. (If that made any sense). I think size or shape of float is important, you don't want steelhead to feel resistance. Just my 2 cents.

Can I be the photographer? LMAO. I like the Blackbird or Drennan floats that are orange on top and clear on the bottom. U use surgical tubing to hold them on and they are a little more stealthy when the water is clear. I agree with SEAPRO about the resistance thing but the visual I disagree with. I've seen a steelhead get spooked by fishing line so the more stealthy you can be the more better! LOL. Anyhow, when fishing spawn there are different ways to fish it...On the bottom like SEAPRO said or slightly off the bottom. Maybe 3-6 inches off the bottom at times. Ever see those little floater pellets they sell. They are nice for slower water. Add a few the next time you tie up some spawn sacks. They can make the world of difference. Later.

Well you certainly have more experience then me BK. I've never fished any real clear water either. I do know that steelhead have incredible sight compared to almost all other species, so what you are saying makes pretty good sense. I'll have to get stealtheir and hopefully catch more fishes. Thanks for the advise. :-)

I know some of the guys that fish the Rocky and east use the weighted styrafoam bobbers that are white on the bottom and floresant orange or chartreause on top. Alot of them were painting the bottom black and they started making them that way a couple of years ago. These are what I have. Just wanted to know if I shoud paint all of them or not.
