Went to the Rocky today. Really muddy and swift. When do you guys that fish it, think it will be clear enough to fish? I tried for about an hour down by Rt 82. Should I have gone closer to the Lake?

| I would just say you should wait a few more days. Keep track of the flow rate on http://waterdata.usgs.gov/oh/nwis/rt this site and you will know when its close. |

| Thanks Wake. I live in your area, so not making any long trips. Unless you consider from Ridge and Snow to Rt 82 a long one. I did take a long time getting there yesterday. As I went from home to Frank's Bait and Tackle and then up to Lorain Ave. Then took the park off Lorain and went through it to 82. I still haven't tried my waders on. Have to do that today. I have a 5/6 weight fly rod. Don't think it's heavy enough for the Steelies. |

Bob I look for at least some green tint to the water for it to be fish able to me. Your best bet would be to fish lower than Olmsted Falls on the west branch and Lagoon dam on the East. From those points to the lake. |

LOL, that was last December and it was a hell of alot colder than it looks. Had a friend take the pic.
I got into steelheading around '95 with the fly rod. Took me a season and a half to hook and lose my first one on a cold January day. I then got a noodle rod around '99 or 2000 and enjoyed that even more than the bug stick even though I had learned to have great success at swinging streamers and dead drifting nymphs. I found that I could do that with the spinning gear and could also drift bait. About three years ago I got a pin and that is what gets most of the work these days unless it is really windy or I am looking for a change of pace. The center pin is just another wrinkle that allows for longer drag free drifts and only after learning to cast the beast. What I find cool about it is the fight. All drag is applied with your fingers. Just you and the fish. The center pin is every bit the art form as the fly rod and I am still in the beginning stages of learning. Like wake I am a steelhead freak and it is not uncommon that I am on the river at dawn with suit and tie covered up by waders and wading jacket. It get a little tougher with the cold weather though.

| Sure looks like a lot more contact to that fish than I was making when I took my pictures. Lot more of that protective slim being touched. Guess its all just a matter of opinion. Nice Fish though! How long was that one? What kind of set up do u recommend for that center pin deal? |

Thats about the same path I'm taking now reo. I started with just my spin out fit then bought a noodle rod this year. After watching them guys on Fly&Float and talking with Craig & Erie Outfitters I'm going to center pin also next year. Wife said noway on a $300.00 outfit this winter. lol This spring sounds like a good time to start. You mind someday I tag along to check it out? We can hit all Kev's holes if ya want. It'll be getting pretty cold for him soon. |

Sorry Chucky, Never gets too cold for me. We are approaching my favorite time of year. WINTER!!!! I love it. Ice fishing is my favorite kind of fishing. The colder the better. We even drill holes in the ice on the river and catch steelies. Its a blast. You are more than welcome to fish all the holes I fish. They're on public land. Take er easy. I'm goin fishing.
