I'm thinking of looking into a bigger boat for Erie as I only have a 16' Lund now. I'd like to have a smoother, drier and possibly safer ride with more room while at the same time not get carried away on GAS $$$$. I've looked on the net at several postings and ads and for an aluminum boat, I'm thinking of a Lund Baron or Tyee.... on the glass side I think it's down to 3 manufacturers....Aquasport, Striper, or Grady White. I'd like to hear back on your opinion's on these or others if I should look into something else. From what I can gather, for the $$$ an Aquasport would be the way to go as they are economically priced and more cockpit than cabin....thus more room for fishing. The stripers are suppose to have more cabin, less cockpit and the Grady's, while seemingly well built, seem to cost significantly more..... and the glass gives a smoother, drier ride than aluminum????
Thoughts?

All I know is that I have a 16' bass tracker and my next boat will have a bout the same kind of lay out but will have a full lengh wind sheild so we don't get so wet, cuddies are nice to store stuff but I think they take up way to much room for fishing.

I saw that, was originally thinking of 20' + footer, but may wait to hear reviews once guys start getting them.... I would imagine they will be comparable to the Rangers.....

Works nice on flat water, wish they showed on 2-4 footers. Angling1, I have a 1775 Pro V 1994 I bought used this year. I like the open floor plan but I think ulitmately I would also like to go to a 20' maybe Tyee. Like bigmtman I would also like the walk through windshield, although that gives up some room. I'm hoping to get out with a couple other owners to compare layouts etc. I kind of posted a similar question in another post earlier, as I was actually thinking 25' or so and having it docked, problem is that does limit your ability to tow to wherever you want to go, so likely I'm going to stick with a Lund. Sure love the way mine plows through the water and pretty dry for the most part.

That add for Lunds would look different on Lake Erie in 3-4. I would like to see that!!! I don't know where they are boating but I only see that about once a year.

DE...ypou seem to be an experienced angler as far as i can see, especially on Erie.... you have any opinion on the above metioned manufactureres? Sounds like youwouldn't go with an aluminum/Lund.....I thing a Grady may be the way to go, but don't kn ow as though I could afford one unless it a late 80's series....

Eye Troller has a 20 foot Tyee Lund and it handles the water on Erie very nicely. Grady Whites are fantastic boats for Erie water as well. Both good choices.

theangling1,I have been on alot of boats over the years just like a lot of you but my big thing is I want a all around boat I don't want to just be limited to lake erie.So I think for me a Lund stly boat around 18-20 foot with a full wind shield and all open floor plan to fish is the ticket.A grady is great like doubleagle has, especialy when it turns nasty on the lake but still when the lake has 4 footers or more it is a pain to fish and just not to enjoyable in my own opion and the bigger the boat the more $ up keep and then if you dock it thats a lot of money also and if you trailer a big boat you need a bigger truck or van that uses more gasup keep all year even when you are not towing the boat.A lot to think about and good luck.

You hit the nail on the head Mark. I didn't say that Lund's weren't any good, they all advertise the same with calm water. With my many years of Erie experience I have some requirements for a boat to have regardless of what brand it is. It would be nice to also ride in them also. I would be looking at a Lund it I was to buy another boat. Grady's are expensive for a reason and some boats are cheaper for a reason. It just might take some years to show you the reason, like bad stringers or transoms. Safety wise I wouldn't trade my Grady for very many boats out there and I think about that every time I get in some rough water or a storm. I do think that a 20' boat would be a starting point and then a full top and side curtains.

I was talking to Crosseyes this morning and he brought up a very good point. We were talking about 4' waves and he stated that no one likes fishing in 4' waves, it's the trip back is where most of us get hit with rough water. I thought that that was very true, if I know that there will be 4' waves I probably won't go out but if I am already there and it turns to 4' waves what are you going to do. Be safe, put the top and curtans up and motor in at a safe speed.

Boat upgrade is complete.....ended up with a 1996 23' Sylvan offshore fisherman. Looks to be in very good condition but was not in a position where I could see it in the water. The boat has been stored for the past 4 years and the wife said it had to go...... after sitting for 4 years, put a battery in, primed the carbs with a little gas and looks like she's gonna fire just fine. Does need a little TLC but hoping to have her on the water in a couple weeks.....just in time for eyes to turn on on the big pond. See ya out there....

ok...starting to think I understand why I picked this boat up at a good price. Drained all the old gas from the system and put in new. Started it up and had problems getting it to idle....seemed to be fine after a litle bit though....maybe still had some of the old gas in it. After running for several minutes, everything sounds fine....looked in the bilge and had a steady oil drip off the front bottom side of the motor... Hoping it's just an oil pan gasket. If so, not a bid deal other than possibly having to pull the engine to replace it...if I have to pull it, I plan on checking the entire bottom side of the motor and take advantage of the opportunity. Still hoping to be on the water shortly, but may be next spring now.

Four years out of the water may have taken a toll on the bellows and shift cable boot, (assuming it's and I/O). I would check these for dryrot before you hit too deep of water.

I just bought a used 26' Baha Fisherman. Does anyone know much about these boats? I've always thought they were a good brand but can't seem to find much on the net about them. I'm taking it on a sea trial tomorrow and if everything goes well, I'll be docking it at the "V".

Got her on the water today..... everything seems to be working besides the speedometer and trim guage....Engine and drive sound great. Now to just get the oil leak fixed and week after next I can bring her over to the big pond for a trial while on vacation.
